Girl Scouts was founded on March 12, 1912. The organization dedicated to "building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place" celebrates its 95th birthday this year.
Members of Girl Scout troop 60438 and their leaders did brisk business at the Middletown A&P store in the Washington Street Plaza recently, selling Girl Scout cookies to the community.
Girl Scout Week finishes up March 14, and girls across the country wore "pearls" to commemorate founder Juliet Gordon Lowe, who sold her own set of matched pearls to fund http://www.girlscouts.org/news/ in its early days.
In Connecticut, more than 55,000 girls, ages 5-17, are Girl Scouts, and some 21,000 adults volunteer as mentors, teachers or serve as directors and leaders. Outdoor programs and camps utilize 3,100 acres of open space in the state.
