Bridge work on Interstate 91 in Springfield created a chokepoint on a drive north. Three lanes narrowed to one, and led to massive delays as all traffic merged.
Original plans for getting to a special event in Amherst, Mass., were stalled as time spent waiting soaked up a good portion of the beautiful New England afternoon. It was time to adapt to the traffic and make the most of the time left for the day.
A side journey led to the Hudson Valley Arabian Horse Show held inside the coliseum at the Eastern States Exposition grounds, a welcome diversion.
And while Arabians are the favored breed of kings and sheiks (they are most versatile and are poetry in motion), finding out about the upcoming Vermont Spring Classic Morgan Horse Show May 19 through May 22 was a bonus while at the event.
The Morgan is a personal favorite, a breed that originated in the United States.
